I know ...you're busy. You run all day long tending to your family, working a job, or running a business. You fall into bed each night exhausted.
You lay awake with your mind going ninety to nothing. You toss and turn and in the morning you feel like you worked all night in a salt mine.
I've been there. I have tried many things to help me sleep better over the years. Some things worked, some didn't.
Sleep deprivation is becoming a public health epidemic as more people struggle with not getting enough rest. Not getting enough sleep is linked to car and work accidents. Insufficient sleep leads to depression, weight gain, metabolic issues, premature aging, low-grade inflammation, mood swings, and reduced quality of life.
Did you know that you can die from sleep deprivation before you starved to death? It takes about 2 weeks to die from starvation while 10 days without sleep could kill you.

Cortisol is the primary stress hormone. This is the fight or flight hormone that gives our bodies enough energy to survive dangerous situations. When cortisol level increases it triggers a release of amino acids from your muscles, glucose from the liver, and fatty acids into the bloodstream. this is then secreted throughout your body, peaking in the morning and dropping at night to help us get to sleep.
Our busy lives are so full of stress, poor diets, and lack of good sleep that this "natural" timeclock is disrupted and our cortisol levels are high all day long.
High cortisol levels have been linked to:
- Adrenal fatigue
- Hormonal imbalance
- Elevated cholesterol
- Elevated blood sugar
- Heart disease
- Decreased Sex Hormones
- Mood swings
- Weight gain
The good news is there are EASY steps you can take to improve your sleep. A good healthy diet, of course as well as avoiding stimulants, keeping your blood sugar stable, and exercising will help support a more restful night's sleep.

How do you use essential oils to help you get a good night's sleep? Well, there are three ways you can use essential oils.
At night I usually diffuse essential oils and put them on my feet and wrist. Remember everyone is different. What works for me may not work for you. BUT these 5 essential oils or blends I have found to work for many people. So experiment a little and find what works for you.

Known as the swiss army knife of essential oils. It is very calming. Studies show participants who diffused Lavender oil at night ranked their sleep 20% better than the placebo group. You can use it by its self or mixed with another oil.
AHHH, relaxing, soothing Cedarwood. It helps the brain to STOP processing. It stimulates the limbic region of the brain which is the center of our emotions and memories. The limbic system is only activated by the sense of smell. This is why essential oils can be so powerful.

I use Cedarwood and Lavender together on my feet or diffuse them or both!
I have only recently started using this and it is my new favorite. I have been using it by itself with a carrier oil but you can blend it with the Lavender and Cedarwood too. Vetiver comes from the Vetiver plant in India. It can calm your nerves with its earthy smell and it helps to relax the nervous system.
Vetiver is a very thick oil so you have to warm it a little to get it to come out. I carry it in my pocket or.....
** NOTE- Just like anything else there are safety guidelines to follow with essential oils. There are some oils you have to use a carrier oil with when applying to your skin. I use a carrier oil with just about every essential oil. I like how it feels and feel like it absorbs better and makes the essential oil go further.
