I know ...you're busy. You run all day long tending to your family, working a job or running a business. You fall into bed each night exhausted. 

BUT THEN.....

You lay awake with your mind going ninety to nothing. You toss and turn and in the morning you feel like you worked all night in a salt mine.

I've been there. I have tried many things to help me sleep better over the years. Some things worked, some didn't.

Until now.

Sleep deprivation is becoming a public health epidemic as more people struggle with not getting enough rest. Not getting enough sleep is linked to car and work accidents. Insufficient sleep leads to depression, weight gain, metabolic issues, premature aging, low-grade inflammation, mood swings and reduced quality of life. 

Did you know that you can die from sleep deprivation before you starved to death?  It takes about 2 weeks to die from starvation while 10 days without sleep could kill you.

There are many factors that can affect your sleep:

Cortisol is the primary stress hormone. This is the fight or flight hormone that gives our bodies enough energy to survive dangerous situations. When cortisol level increases it triggers a release of amino acids from your muscles, glucose from the liver and fatty acids into the bloodstream. this is then secreted throughout in your body all-day peaking in the morning and dropping at night to help us get to sleep.

BUT...

Our busy lives are so full of stress, poor diets and lack of good sleep that this "natural" timeclock is disrupted and our cortisol levels are high all day long.

High cortisol levels  have been linked to:
 
  1.  Adrenal fatigue
  2. Hormonal imbalance 
  3. Elevated cholesterol
  4. Elevated blood sugar
  5. Heart disease
  6. Decreased Sex Hormones
  7. Mood swings
  8. Depression
  9. Weight gain
The good news is there are EASY steps you can take to improve your sleep. A good healthy diet, of course as well as avoiding stimulants, keeping your blood sugar stable and exercising will help support a more restful night's sleep.

Essential oils don't just smell pretty they have tons of amazing properties. Each oil has it's own set of organic compounds that make that oil unique. Many essential oils have several different chemical compounds which are why one essential oil can be good for many different things.  Some contain antioxidants that create an unfriendly environment for free radicals that come from outside the body. Tobacco, smoke, toxins, pollutants that damage your body's cells and DNA by altering their chemical structure are all free radicals. ( No wonder we have trouble sleeping!)

Essential oils can provide oxygen to the cells. They support the circulatory, endocrine, digestive and nervous system. They can increase energy, help with stress, mood management, improve focus and help you relax and sleep.

It's almost as if God knew what he was doing when he created plants and trees!!

Lavender

Known as the swiss army knife of essential oils. It is very calming. Studies show participants who diffused Lavender oil at night ranked their sleep 20% better than the placebo group. You can use it by its self or mixed with another oil.


CEDARWOOD

AHHH, relaxing, soothing Cedarwood. It helps the brain to STOP processing. It stimulates the limbic region of the brain which is the center of our emotions and memories. The limbic system is only activated by the sense of smell. This is why essential oils can be so powerful.

I use Cedarwood and Lavender together on my feet or diffuse them or both!



Vetiver

I have only recently started using this and it is my new favorite. I have been using it by itself with a carrier oil but you can blend it with the Lavender and Cedarwood too. Vetiver comes from the Vetiver plant in India. It can calm your nerves with its earthy smell and it helps to relax the nervous system. 



 Vetiver is a very thick oil so you have to warm it a little to get it to come out.  I carry it in my pocket or.....



** NOTE- Just like anything else there are safety guidelines to follow with essential oils. There are some oils you have to use a carrier oil with when applying to your skin.  I use a carrier oil with just about every essential oil. I like the way it feels and I feel like it absorbs better and makes the essential oil go further.

A few carrier oils you can use are: 

Coconut Oil
Olive Oil
Jojoba Oil

FRANKINCENSE

I always say if it's good enough for Jesus, its good enough for me :)

Frankincense has a sweet, warm balsamic aroma that helps to refocus the mind, overcome stress. It helps clear the mind to get a good night's sleep.
STRESS AWAY BLEND
 
Stress Away is a blend of Copaiba, Lime, Vanilla, Cedarwood, Lavender, and Ocotea. It helps to relieve daily stress and anxious feelings, promotes relaxation and restores equilibrium.

12 Ingredients To Avoid In Your Personal Care Products.

You don't know what you don't know, right?

But once you know, what next? Ignore it or make a few changes?

The ingredient list on our personal care products can be downright scary. With so many listed and many of them, you can't pronounce much less know what they are.  Try this--take a few of the ingredients listed and search on Google with the words "dangers of" in front of it and see what happens. It's shocking and to be honest, makes me a little mad. 

We use these on our children! Their little bodies are still growing which makes some of these ingredients even more dangerous.


Many of these ingredients are known as endocrine disruptors, which means they jack up your hormones. I don't know about y'all but my hormones don't need any more jacking up than they can be already!!

What exactly are endocrine disruptors?

They are naturally occurring compounds or man-made substances that can mimic or interfere with hormones in the body. They may turn on, turn off or modify signals that hormones carry. In other words, wreak havoc on our bodies.

Here is the list of 12 ingredients to watch out for.


Propylene Glycol and Butylene Glycol--The EPA consider this so toxic it requires gown, gloves, and goggles when burying. They also warn against skin contact to prevent brain, kidney and liver abnormalities.

Parabens- Methyl, Butyl Propyl and Ethyl.Used as preservatives. Not always labeled. Used in deodorants and other skincare products and have been found in breast cancer tumors. May contribute to male sterility, hormone imbalance in females and early puberty.

Phthalates-Usually not listed on the label but in many products. Health effects include damage to the liver and kidneys, birth defects and decrease sperm counts.

Sunscreen chemicals: These are common ingredients in sunscreens. They are known to be free radical generators and are believed to damage DNA and cause cancer.

        Benzophenone

         Methoxycinnamate

         PABA

Another really big ingredient to look out for is fragrance. It can mean hundreds of different chemicals that they do not have to list. If you see fragrance listed, it's not good!
